UEFA B LICENSE ASSESSMENT
DEFENDING FROM THE FRONT WITH A MIDFIELD THREE AND A FRONT THREE (4-3-3)
The UEFA B license is about affecting as many players as you can with knowledgable interventions, showing your coaching knowledge and also it has to be realistic to the topic which you have been given. Here i have written up my assessment which i did a couple of years back now. The assessment focuses more on, what is happening around the field than whats going on with the ball. Enjoy...
Scenario/Strategy:
The blue team are in a 1-4-3-3, this is the team which I will be mainly focusing on throughout the session. The red team will be in a 1-4-4-2 formation. The blues will play with a false 9 as there striker and also one central midfield as a deep lying midfielder.

Working with blue team. 1-1-3-3(image above).

Reds set up in 1-4-2-1, The shaded area is showing where the pressure should be applied on the pitch(image above).

Triggers and Affecting players in their positions (Shown in image above) :
The 3 central midfielders will be positioned in a ‘V’ kind of shape where one will be sitting deep and other two pressing,(three man press).
The wingers curving their run showing the FBs to play inside. Their trigger for this is when the ball is half way through the pass when the full back is receiving the ball from a player. Also with the wingers 1 winger will drop off 5-10yards and the other will mark the full back tightly, this is so we can dictate the play and therefore for the dropped off winger, once the trigger has come about, he can then press.
The number 9 (striker/false 9) should be positioned almost near the Centre Back(CB) but should have enough space between him and the CB so he is able to quickly intercept the ball if the Full back (FB) should decide or attempt to play the ball into the Red centre midfielder(CM) .
The number 10 (Centre attacking midfielder (CAM)) should be aware that if the ball is switched to the right he will have to do the strikers role to apply the pressure a lot quick and therefore the striker will then drop into the number 10 role.
Key Points:
· If the oppositions head is down looking at the ball, that is your trigger to immediately press, if their head is up it means they are looking to pass or dribble. · If the opposition is having little touches your trigger is to then wait and delay them, therefore try to jockey the player away. If the player decides to have a big touch, can you try to steal the ball? DELAY and DENY.
· Communication between the midfield three.
· To stop the opposition playing out from the back and to make them force it long. Dictating their play!
Principles of defending:
· Angles and distances· Narrow and compact· Communication
